Understanding Turkey One Bite at a Time

“Gönül, ne kahve ister ne kahvehane, gönül sohbet ister, kahve bahane.” – Turkish idiom

First time visitors to Turkey can easily be overwhelmed. It’s my own concerted opinion that three weeks is the minimum time needed to introduce oneself to Turkey, but even one hour is preferable to never visiting. The places of cultural and historical significance are so vast and numerous that it’s nearly impossible to visit them all. In Istanbul alone the remnants of Byzantine and Ottoman empires intertwine with the modern Turkish Republic in a rich tapestry. The beauty of Turkey’s Taurus Mountains, Marama coast, and Lycian Trail have inspired many to abandon their home countries and retire to its tranquil beauty.

However, it is only through food can anyone appreciate Turkey and Turkish culture. Unlike the abrupt social interactions typical in America, relationships in Turkey are dependent on conversation. Enter tea and coffee. The coffee houses of the Ottoman Empire were famous as gathering places where politics, poetry, and business were discussed. In a narrower circle, a hot cup of tea or coffee allowed two friends to converse as the boiling liquid cooled.

Turkish cuisine is far more than the assemblage of ingredients and flavors on the plate. No Turkish kitchen is complete without a healthy supply of garlic, onion, and parsley, but it’s the time spent cutting those onions, shredding tomatoes, or wrapping grape leaves are where mothers, sisters, and daughters connect. Families and friends gathered together for grilled fish (balık) accompanied by glasses of Turkey’s anise drink, Rakı – famously called a “rakı balık” dinner – will enjoy hours of fellowship while eating mezes under the evening sky. I could list more, but dining in Turkey is an experience for the soul as well as a delight for the stomach.

Food is so central to Turkish identity and culture that it permeates the language. Parsley is so prevalent in Turkish dishes that to admonish someone for being a gossip you would say: “Don’t be a parsley!” (“maydanoz olma!”) (i.e. don’t be in everything or everyone’s business). Or if someone did something stupid you might say: “Look at the mint he ate.” (“yediği naneye bak”). A final example is “ağzında bakla ıslanmamak”) which translates to “To eat beans without getting them wet.” You have to soak beans to soften them before cooking, so this phrase would be used to describe someone that passes news without thinking over the consequences first.

There’s even the song “Domates Biber Patlıcan” by artist Barış Manço, (translation: Tomatoes, Pepper, an eggplant dish). Listen to a modern cover by Turkish pop singer Karsu.

Which brings me to my two favorite words in the Turkish language:

Dolmuş” from the root word dolma, “to stuff”.

My wife jokes that there isn’t a food that a Turkish cook doesn’t want to stuff. Turkish cuisine includes stuffed bell peppers, various forms of stuffed eggplants (patlican), stuffed pastas (mantı), fried pastries stuffed with cheese (sigara böreği), and stuffed grape leaves (dolma). Whatever it is, a Turk can find a way to stuff it and serve it for lunch.

In Turkish cities there are multiple methods of transportation. Istanbul boasts bus service, metro lines, trams, a funicular, and taxi service. Ubiquitous in the city is the presence of the shared taxis that service the areas not reached by regular metro or bus service. They were also fairly inexpensive and even the poorest of travelers could afford to use them. The original shared taxis were large, yellow four-door cars. Were it to be privately owned a reasonable person would identify a driver plus four seats, however as a shared taxi commuters would cram into the every cubic foot of the shared space. They became known as “Dolmuş” (pronounced “dole-mush”) – which literally translates to “I heard it is stuffed” – stuffed with people. A dolmuş today is the size of a mini bus, but the name stuck and I’m all the happier for it.

My wife had led a typical Turkish life in the thirty years before we met. She worked in her home city of Istanbul and each summer she would take a beach vacation to enjoy the turquatic waters, sun, and peaceful atmosphere somewhere on Turkey’s southwestern coast. She had often told me about the most famous, posh or popular beaches for Turks along the coast. Some attract foreign tourists, and some remain known only to Turks. One such location is Sarımsaklı Plajı near the town of Ayvalık. It took me a few years to connect the restaurant-Turkish I had learned to the image of beachgoers in an exclusive destination, but once I made the connection I can never forget it. Sarımsaklı Plajı = Garlicky Beach.

There is no better proof of the integral nature of food and cuisine in Turkish culture than discovering it mixed into the Turkish place names, idioms, and expressions that decorate the Turkish language. Take a visit, a bite, or just lend Turkey your ear.

Finding Peace at Çanakkale

Istanbul is a deep well. Its sweet waters sate any thirst for history. For two years I lived in the Ottoman capital city, once the center of two vast empires and a megacity of a proud republic. Daily I drank from this well. Each gulp brought hitherto unknown names into my consciousness. Names such as Taurus and Nemrut, Kaçkar and Cappadocia, Bodrum and Antalya filled me with wonder. As is my habit, I began reading about the land and its people. The history stretched across these names like a skin bringing life to long-dead Byzantium. Clashes of great armies, deeds of heroism and treachery, and the mysterious and magical came alive. However, it is the name of Çanakkale that still drips with emotion.

Çanakkale is a tiny town at the end of the Dardanelle Strait and is the exact opposite of it’s northern brother which teems with millions of people crowding the Bosphorus Strait. The connection to Istanbul seems unlikely, yet throughout all its wars Istanbul, and Constantinople before it, has relied on Çanakkale to defend the Dardanelles against hostile armadas. It is the guardian of the gateway to the great city.

The Dardanelles Strait is pinched between the Anatolian mainland and the knobby Gallipoli Peninsula. The 1914 British campaign to force the Dardanelles, seize the Gallipoli Peninsula, and capture Istanbul is how most of the western world knows the area. The Gallipoli Campaign also looms large in the Turkish Republic’s founding story and the legend of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. It is here that his decisive action spoiled the invading army’s advance and the sacrifices of his soldiers became an inspiration for a nation seeking independence.

Bus tickets were cheap in Turkey. For a few Turkish Lira, at a good exchange rate, I joined one of my habitual traveling companions on a journey to this sacred peninsula. It was a long trip and we boarded in the dead of night; too early to be described as morning, but well after last call. The bus headed west and left the urban landscape behind. After the dawn both sides of the highway were flanked by neverending fields of sunflowers – a staple of Turkish bodegas and markets. Similar to short haul flight, an attendant walked up and down the aisle serving refreshments and snacks from a narrow rolling cart. Only stopping once for a truck-stop breakfast, the bus deposited us in Çanakkale by late morning.

The town rests on the eastern edge of the strait. For millennia it was positioned to influence the sea trade between the Black and Aegean Seas. During World War I it hosted the Ottoman military headquarters for the defense of the Dardanelles. Much of that era is consigned to national parks and memorials on the Gallipoli Peninsula. What remains in the town is the Çanakkale Naval Museum, which has many naval warfare relics including the big guns from the shore batteries that fired on the British Royal Navy in March 1914. 

The British Empire had developed some impressive new battleships in the dreadnaught class prior to World War I and Winston Churchill, First Lord of the Admiralty, wanted to utilize them in a naval dash to capture Istanbul. Questionable British generalship met a resolute Ottoman defense and the plan was spoiled. Hastily, and with supply lines running all the way to Egypt, General Sir Ian Hamilton launched a land invasion of the Gallipoli Peninsula. It was a disaster. 

The causes of the Allied failure are too numerous to be listed in this story. Just as the Western Front had gone subterranean with trench warfare, so did the fighting on the Gallipoli Peninsula. The Australian soldiers of the Australian and New Zealand Corps (ANZAC) earned the name “diggers” for the hundreds of miles of trenches they hollowed out on the tiny peninsula. Waves of men disappeared in fruitless charges across machine-gun swept no-man’s lands. The hillsides turned into a moonscape as vegetation vanished under the pummeling of artillery shells. These places are now memorials, cemeteries, and places of remembrance. Even in 2012 I could see remnants of trenches and brass shell casings still loosely held by the dusty earth. Under the hot Mediterranean sun I could only imagine the misery of the months spent on those hillsides.

I visited the cemetery for the 57th Infantry Regiment (Ottoman) where wreaths are still laid. I looked up at the cliffs at the edge of ANZAC Cove where thousands of soldiers waded ashore expecting flat beaches. Commonwealth governments still hold annual remembrance ceremonies there. And I stood at Lone Pine Hill, where one desperate charge after another wiped out a generation of Australian men. The sombreness of the peninsula was overwhelming.

After drenching myself in the bloody memories of Gallipoli we needed to reset our emotions and mentally return to the modern world. From underneath the early-summer sun the cooling embrace of the Aegean Sea beckoned. Through our boutique hotel we had arranged a few places aboard a scuba charter. The Troy was a shambles of a dive boat. The decks were unkempt and the cabin moldy. Sun-bleached wetsuits hung on a narrow rod where unrepaired rips were displayed unashamedly. The life preservers looked dangerously close to being demoted to anchors. Naval precision it was not.

Exiting the opening of the Dardanelle Strait the boat passed the ancient city of Troy where Odysseus devised the Trojan Horse in the most memorable feat of military deception. Ancient Greeks and Trojans fought over this critical terrain long before the Byzantines and the Turks. Our boat eventually anchored only a hundred yards from shore along the Turkish coast. Short dirt cliffs met the Aegean Sea with spectacular indifference. Groceries were delivered by an inflatable dinghy from a local village for the homemade lunch of manti. This ravioli-type dish is composed of minced lamb and beef, parsely, onion, and spices stuffed into tiny dumplings, covered with a butter tomato sauce and drenched in yoghurt. Served with big chunks of fresh bread for mopping up sauce it is the perfect companion to physical exertion. The smell of cooking onions wafting from the galley intermixed with salty sea air. The bow of the boat nodded in agreement with the rhythm of the water. It was a leisurely atmosphere on board as divers unhurriedly entered and exited the water.

I hadn’t been diving in years. A great rush of saltwater cleansed my spirit as I took a giant stride off the bow. In an instant I was weightless, reduced to the essentials of life – breathing air and peering into the depths of the unknown. It was unremarkable diving, though. Visibility was poor and aquatic life was sparse. I explored the bottom for a half hour before my air guage summoned me to the surface. After changing four o-rings on a scuba tank, my faith in the rental gear shaken, I elected to forgo a second dive. Instead I swam on the surface and sunbathed on the warm decks.  The water was calm and lapped gently into a calming lullaby. I was at peace.

The next morning the hotel set a simple breakfast on an outdoor table. The white cheese, green olives, and amber honey tasted fresh as the morning was young. Turks cherish their street cats, and that morning a trio held vigil as I scooped out the inside of a perfectly soft-boiled egg. I cradled a saucer while using my palm to monitor the temperature of a traditional hourglass-shaped tea glass. It’s impossible to hurry a breakfast such as that. In a few hours I would be on the return bus back to Istanbul. In between delicate sips I reflected on the weekend that had been, the wars that had been fought there, and the legacy of a peninsula at the beginning of a new millenium.

Mount Kaçkar – My First Mountain

I’m not a mountaineer. However, in mid-2012 I had hoped to take the first steps, literally, toward making that claim. In August of that year, I flew to the city of Trabzon, in eastern Turkey, to join a guide-led group to the summit of Mount Kaçkar in northeastern Turkey. With a natural harbor, Trabzon grew in prosperity during the Byzantine Empire, under the name Trebizond, until succumbing to Ottoman conquerors in 1461. The city lies along the Black Sea coast and underneath the foothills of the Pontic Mountains. Although it is home to one of Turkey’s biggest football clubs (Tabzonspor) it gave me the feeling of a frontier outpost. For centuries Trabzon served as a gateway for Ukrainian, Russian, and Georgian trade and my wife’s family roots can be traced to the snowy mountainous areas east of the city. For me, it was my entry point into a beautiful land of misty mornings, black tea cultivation, and my first mountain summit. 

I did not know what I was really getting myself into. In a medium-sized backpack, I had assembled a gallimaufry of old active-wear and hiking gear, most of which I panic-bought in the months leading up to my trekking trip. It was a classic of naive optimism and budgetary constraints. Nothing I owned was designed specifically for the activity I was about to embark on, and this would bite me in the ass over the coming week of elevation changes, boulder fields, and hail storms. It would be a lesson I would learn for the future, but on this trip my stubborn pride would carry me over these obstacles. I had set my mind to climbing a mountain.

Abuting the Turkish Republic’s eastern borders are Georgia, Armenia, Iran, Iraq, and Syria. Some of these border areas are military zones with very restricted access. Thankfully, the Black Sea region is peaceful and no such considerations affected our trek, however northeastern Turkey remains an underdeveloped tourist destination. We barely encountered signs of human life while on the trail and the villages we passed seemed untouched by time. It wasn’t until we reached the Kaçkar Summit basecamp that we met another group of hikers. Within my own group were a trio of middle-aged men on a youth-seeking adventure, a retiree fulfilling a promise to his younger self, a yoga instructor, photographer, office workers, and a pair of college students. I, alone, was the only non-Turk. Fortunately, the college students were studying in Los Angeles and would serve as my translators for the week. 

After our airport rendezvous we piled our gear into a van and departed Trabzon without a backward glance. The mountains were calling. I looked out at the Black Sea as we traveled east. Out in the water stood a line of freighters waiting their turn at the port. I imagined the invisible radiation cloud that crept down from Europe after the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, contaminating Turkey’s Black Sea tea industry, and affecting the health of many Turkish men and women for over a decade. That thought didn’t last too long. Before I could consider the implications of nuclear half-life, our van turned south at Rize, a town of concrete squares and concrete charm, and immediately began our ascent of the mountain range.

We would spend two nights at the hikers’s haven of Ayder Yaylası preparing ourselves. Each day we were led on little strolls in the surrounding hills to get our legs used to constant uphill walking – and so our guides could disecretly evaluate our balance and stamina. The hills around the village were thick with trees and their steep height trapped an unmoving, perpetual fog. Mountain streams visible in the distance flowed down like silver stripes on the dark green landscape. It was peaceful and quiet – the perfect launching pad for an adventure.

Beneath my calm exterior were mounting doubts. I worried that I had the wrong shoes (I did), if my rain gear was sufficient (it wasn’t), and if I was missing anything important (I was). The only shops in the village sold fresh bread, local honey, and handmade souvenirs. There were no outfitters to correct any glaring mistakes in my inventory. Except for a pair of hand-knit yarn gloves I purchased (amazingly I didn’t bring any gloves!), what I had in my bag was all I was going to have for the week. We wouldn’t return to this village until after we saw the summit of Mount Kaçkar, and by then I had a whole new wishlist of gear I wanted to buy.

After the acclimation period I expected the serious hiking to begin with huzzah, but it only began with a sleepy ride to an unremarkable bend in a fog covered road. There were no other hikers around and barely a discernible trail to start on. It wasn’t too early in the day, but the mist was still heavy from the overnight coolness. Without fanfare we turned uphill into the unknown. Although it was only our first hill our group quickly began to stretch out as the unfit began to feel their legs grow heavy and their hearts beat with exertion.

Upwards we walked. The air was brisk and heavy with moisture and soon we were meeting the raindrops halfway. For hours our visibility was limited by a gray shroud that hid the peaks and valleys around us. We trudged southward, cresting a ridgeline and entering another rain-soaked valley. We stopped overnight in the village of Yaylalar. It had a hikers lodge beautifully placed in a rugged valley next to a rain-swelled stream. It was a godsend. I was woefully unprepared for the onslaught of mother nature on that first full day of hiking. My rainjacket had already reached its saturation point and wet spots began appearing underneath its seams. I was impractically wearing shorts on that cold day, and I soon came to the realization that my modest hiking shoes weren’t rugged enough for the terrain. Their lack of ankle support became especially bothersome later when crossing rocky fields. The only piece of clothing that performed admirably was a fleece jacket. 

The lodge’s four walls meant heated rooms and the opportunity to dry out soggy gear. At every available space soaking equipment was strung up in a desperate attempt to dry it out. A dozen pairs of boots formed a smelly, soggy ring around the lodge’s wood burning stove, creating a steamy dining room that evening. We all hoped we wouldn’t endure a whole week of similar

The rain would eventually abate. The next few days the sun shone and the skies cleared and revealed to us jutting spires stabbing into blue skies. At that elevation the trees had disappeared, but a grass and wildflowers still covered the ground below rocky slopes. It was a simple, harsh beauty.

We were building up strength in our legs in those first few days before making the more challenging climb to the summit. Eventually, the shakiness in my legs disappeared as the muscles grew stronger and my lungs adapted to the thinner air. Some in my group never adapted and continued to struggle mightily. I’d frequently end up leading the group with my longer stride and faster pace, and use my  advantage to rest longer as I waited for the stragglers to catch up. This disparity earned me the nickname “Superman,” as I often was waiting for the group with my arms in a pseudo-superman pose, usually standing higher on the trail, trying to hide the deep breathes I was taking.

At Dilberdüzü campsite, elevation 2860 meters or 9383 feet, the air temperature was cool. The sun still shone, but frequently the evenings brought rain and hail – flooding the mountain streams and chasing hikers into their tents. I took a mountain bath in a stream – a precursor to the ice-bucket challenge years later. We didn’t attempt a summit the next morning. The weather was too foul and we didn’t want to make an attempt in the dark morning hours, on slippery rocks, under a hail storm. So we waited. Amazingly, I had one bar of cellular service in my tent. My puny cell phone had enough strength to get a call out, but was not strong enough to explain to my girlfriend (now my darling wife) that I was lying in an individual tent, unable to make conversation due to the pounding of hail down. It turned out to be her first mountain experience, as well.

Our second morning at Dilberdüzü was summit day. Our start time was hours before sunrise. Headlamps of climbers already on the trail flickered on the mountainside in front of us. We hoped to summit in eight hours and return to base camp that evening. Although the early morning was still and calm, there was an urgency that didn’t exist on other days – a storm was forecasted to hit that afternoon.

Kaçkar’s ascent immediately tilted up and I took large vertical strides as if climbing a giant’s staircase. Despite the drop in air temperature in the pre-dawn light, my body perspired heavily. Within an hour we could no longer see the yellow and red tents of the base camp. Our path took us past a mirror-like mountain lake and over a sea of boulders. None of them smaller than a basketball. All of them threatening to roll and with each step. I was certain this is where my shoes and ankles would fail me and I’d have to be carried off the mountain in defeat. 

Despite the difficult climb we rested infrequently in those first few hours. The trail never seemed to level off for a bit of respite and three of our party quit, beaten by the mountain. We left them eating snacks and drinking water. We would collect them upon our descent. 

Kaçkar’s summit wasn’t an awe inspiring peak. It was a bit rounded with a large shoulder giving the appearance of an easy summit. The sparse vegetation of the hillside had long since disappeared and our only companions were snow and rock. As we climbed the peak never seemed to get closer. Climbers simply shrank into little specks of color as they ascended.

As our elevation increased we could peer into the surrounding valleys. The morning’s clear skies were fleeting and thick clouds were building. When we lost sight of the summit behind some angry-looking clouds our guides called off the attempt. We were already four hours from basecamp and the summit would add another four hours to our trip. It was too much of a risk for them to take. Disappointingly, we turned our backs and descended the mountain, picking up our resting comrades, and heading for shelter. 

Despite our failure to summit there was still a celebration at base camp that night. One member of our group had come on this trip as a 60th birthday gift to himself. He’d set out to prove something to himself and had packed a bottle of Jack Daniels Whiskey to open on the summit. We had not known he was carrying it with him every day of the trek until he took it out that night. He gave a heartfelt speech that night which warmed the spirits of all in the tent. After he passed around the bottle we were warmed even further. Aided by tiredness and whiskey I quickly fell asleep that night, but it wasn’t the deep sleep of victory.

The next day we left base camp.  The rain and snow we had feared did not enter our valley during the night. We might have succeeded if we would have risked a little more. At the moment of our departure I promised myself to return and make another attempt at Mount Kackar. (It’s been nearly eight years and I have yet to redeem that promise.) Our descent was pleasant and under and increasingly warmer sunshine. Fragrant wildflowers and warm grass perfumed our descent. With a downhill and direct route we reached  Ayder Yaylası by mid-afternoon.

Before we could prepare ourselves for our return flights we had one final task to complete – a stop in the village hamam. After days of walking and enduring less-than-desirable weather, the soothing, steaming waters of the Turkish bath were the ultimate treat. My tender feet and tired legs experienced a rejuvenation when alternating between cold and hot swimming pools. Days of mountain dirt was released from my skin and hair, and my lungs greedily breathed in the heavy air. I left renewed. That night we celebrated again to the sounds of traditional Laz music and dancing.

I would leave the Black Sea region having failed to conquer the summit of Mount Kaçkar. Although, the experience ignited a spark for trekking and being in the mountains. This was only my first mountain attempt, but it would not be my last. I’ve returned to the mountains in other countries seeking the same exhilaration of rock-strewn trails, physical exertion, and summit views. I’m still hoping to call myself a mountaineer one day.

For centuries the Republic of Turkey, and its predecessors, occupied the center of the known world. The land of Anatolia connects the peoples of Asia, the Middle East, Russia, Europe, and Africa. Sometimes by war, always by trade, the lands of Turkey have been significant in the time of man. Today, Turkey is a complex a place as there ever was. The debate over the meaning of Europe, the role of religion in politics, nationalism, and the bloody history of the last two centuries are unavoidable when you step foot on Turkish soil. Trust me, I experienced it every day while living in Istanbul. Understanding and appreciating Turkey requires the expansion of the mind to such places as the Eastern Roman Empire, the Ottoman Empire, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, and Islam.

The first book I read on the subject, and the first book I recommend to friends when they ask me about Turkey, is Roger Crowley’s 1453. It’s true what they say, Istanbul used to be Constantinople. Those five words contain more history, violence, ideas, and story lines than any other sentence in human history. The Roman Republic had expanded from a city to a kingdom, into an Empire, and grown so large that half would fall, what we know as the Byzantine Empire, to continue its legacy. Out of the Asian steppes and Arabian deserts rose a new type of power, and the Ottoman sultans came to the Bosphorus to seize the Roman legacy and inherit its future. The Siege of 1453 is the clash of these two monumental histories colliding on the Bosphorus. The ramifications are still being felt, but the days of the siege itself should not be forgotten. 

The siege brought forth diverse armies and pitted Byzantine Emperor Constantine XI against Sultan Mehmet II – a.k.a. Mehmet the Conqueror – engaged in the most extreme bravery, cowardice, and treachery in a battle over the destiny of god. The revelation of the first siege cannons on the battlefield instantly made the fortified cities of the world vulnerable, and the dynamic use of naval power exemplified human ingenuity and determination. 

The impacts of the fall of Constantinople were immediate and severe. At a time when the history of the Roman empire stretched uninterrupted from the Emperor Constantine XI back over a thousand years to Romulus and Remus, civilization suddenly had to grapple with the permanent demise of the empire’s last vestiges. For Europe, after enjoying extensive trade networks, reaping benefit from Roman expansion, and engaging in multiple crusades to the Holy Land, the East suddenly became a forbidden, mysterious, and impenetrable place. The very existence of the Islamic empires and caliphates would change the arc of European history. For their part, the Ottoman Sultans would look upon Europe, finally unguarded by Byzantine armies, as a prize rightfully theirs. 1453 reads like a novel and the walls of the room I read it in felt too confining as the tale unfolded on the pages in front of me. Crowley followed specific individuals, traced pivotal happenings back to anodyne decisions, and told the story of a battle that was anything but a foregone conclusion. As I finished the final page, I felt the shock of reading a breaking news story. Based purely on momentum, I turned to Roger Crowley again to further my education on the growing Ottoman Empire.

I had the fortune of visiting the island of Malta as part of a military staff ride. A staff ride is an educational program that combines academic study, role playing, and visiting of the actual site to get into the minds of the military commanders and understand the decisions they made. The islands of Malta lie between Sicily and the shores of North Africa and has endured two great sieges in its history. During World War II, as part of the British Empire, it survived constant bombardment and blockade by the Axis powers. The fortresses built by the Knights of Saint John served as headquarters for the Allied commanders as they launched Operation Husky, the invasion of Sicily, in 1943. The island’s fortifications existed because of another siege nearly 400 years earlier – that of the Ottoman Empire. Part of my preparation for that staff ride was reading Roger Crowley’s Empires of the Sea.at

The Mediterranean Sea was the other center of the world. Without knowledge of the Americas and East Asia, the ancient world knew the Mediterranean – the Middle of the Earth – as the focal point for trade, communication, and human civilization. Less a barrier, the sea was the highway of the ancient world connecting Carthage and Rome, Egypt and Anatolia, the Holy Land and Europe. The expansion of the Ottoman Empire gave them control of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, creating significant problems for the kings of Europe. Control over the sea meant control over the known world and the islands of the Mediterranean became the outposts of empires dependent on the sea of their prosperity and survival.

Roger Crowley wrote a second engaging book describing the island battles that defined the competition between the Christian and Islamic Empires of the late Medieval and Renaissance eras. The islands Cyprus, Rhodes, Crete, and Malta had immense importance for the Ottomans, Venetians, Genoese, the French and Spanish kings that sought to control god and destiny on earth. The siege of Malta is another study of individual bravery, folly, indecision, calculus of war, and the luck of a single arquebus shot. As in 1453, the events of 1565 had implications for the world beyond the short days of battle, but to ignore the siege itself would deprive us all of the fascinating stories of the besieged Knights of Malta, the incredible personalities commanding the Ottoman military, and the Ottoman way of war.

The Ottoman sultans reigned for centuries. Even after the empire was mislabeled to “sick man of Europe” the Ottomans adapted and persisted. My experience in Turkey involved a lot of late night discussions on the origins of the Turkish Republic and the legacy of Mustafa Kemal, so for this article I’ll skip the detailed Ottoman histories – with a passing mention of a few worthwhile reads.

Modern Turkey did not simply come about from an election or conquest. To come into existence the world had to go to war, empires had to crumble, and heroes had to rise as impostors wilted under the pressure of the moment. The end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th was an immensely important few decades. Each decision made leading up to the First World War was meant to expand influence, flex power, and further the old world order. No one thought these calculated decisions would ultimately bring the downfall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Ottoman Empire, Imperial Germany, the Russian Empire, start the decline of the British Empire, sow seeds of French decolonization, while giving rise to an entire new world order. Sean McMeekin’s book, The Ottoman Endgame, tells one aspect of these unimaginable times – the specific history of the Ottoman Empire descent and imploded, giving way to the forces of nationalism, democracy, and the right of self-determination. His writing only suffers from copious dates, names, and facts that you would expect from such a complicated story, but it brings to life the most extreme of human dramas. McMeekin does an excellent job of highlighting the foreign policy decisions and diplomatic wrangling done in bad faith, poor foresight, with wildly unreasonable cause-and-effects. Although primarily about the fall of the Ottomans there is plenty there on the other European empires and the cataclysm of World War I. As a history lover I found it gripping, as a foreign policy wonk I took copious notes

McMeekin explains the machinations of emperors and their advisers, but touches down to the actions of the common solider, the unnamed actors in the arc of history. This quote captures the eloquence of his writing with the balance he maintains:

“Battles, alas, are not fought on paper, but on rough and often unpredictable terrain, by officers and men subject to all the limitations posed by nature. They are fought against opponents who may summon dirty unexpected valor when they are pushed against the wall.” – p. 252

There is no understanding modern Turkey without knowing Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. He is a giant in the history of the world that does not get nearly the recognition outside of Turkey that he should. Every year, at the hour of his death the Turkish people stand motionless for a minute of silence to commemorate the great man. Cars stop on the highway, students stand in their classroom, and the average citizen pauses on the sidewalk. His legend has inspired millions, but his legend is based on in mountains of facts. Andrew Mango’s book is a historian’s book, full of details. Atatürk led an immensely interesting life and shaped what has become one of the strongest and most influential countries in the region. Reading about his influences and experiences in early life that shaped his actions is the benefit of every biography – including this one. His experiences growing up in the Ottoman Empire’s army, his bravery in conduct, and his political acumen are worthy of closer study. 

 

Furthermore, in present-day Turkey, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s vision, policies, and actions cannot be understood without appreciating Atatürk’s long shadow on Turkish politics.
